Industrial gasification is a model for transforming U.S. industry to help it remain globally competitive without moving production and jobs overseas.  It allows us to take a low-cost domestic feedstock (such as coal or petcoke or biomass) and produce a synthetic gas (syngas) that can be used the same way as natural gas or oil to make chemicals of higher value, creating economic growth while keeping high technology jobs in the U.S. Industrial gasification typically provides 4 or more times the number of direct jobs as similar-sized coal combustion plants and typically 6 – 7 indirect jobs for each direct industrial job.

Industrial gasification helps us reduce the incremental cost for controlling carbon dioxide emissions because the required process of converting coal into a syngas for industrial uses inherently captures carbon dioxide, a key benefit in the fight against global warming. With the anticipated return of high prices for natural gas and oil, and tightening of regulations for carbon dioxide emissions, we see favorable economics for industrial gasification compared to other alternative processes.
