New Compounds Deliver Exceptional Chemical Resistance and Hydrolytic Stability

Kingsport, Tenn. — June 23, 2009 — Eastman Chemical Company, together with PolyOne Specialty Engineered Materials (PolyOne SEM), announced today the launch of a new family of opaque blends based on Eastman Tritan™ copolyester at NPE2009, June 22 to 26, 2009, in Chicago.

The new family of Edgetek™ XT high performance blends from PolyOne SEM offers opaque compounds that deliver exceptional chemical resistance and hydrolytic stability, as well as outstanding toughness, high gloss and ease of processing.

“The new product family, which incorporates the positive attributes of Eastman Tritan™ copolyester, offers an innovative and effective solution for durable plastic housing,” said Dante Rutstrom, vice president and general manager, Specialty Plastics Business, Eastman Chemical Company. “By working closely with PolyOne SEM, we have been able to help offer a new family of blends within the Edgetek portfolio in North America and Asia and provide manufacturers with new alternative material choices.”

PolyOne’s Edgetek XT blends based on Eastman Tritan™ copolyester are well-suited for hand-held device applications and products that require high-quality and durable housing, such as hand-held GPS and PDA systems, binoculars, small electronics, battery-powered tools, housewares, sporting goods and more. The blends also provide superior toughness and added resistance to chemicals used in cleansers.

By developing opaque Edgetek blends based on Eastman Tritan™ copolyester, PolyOne SEM can offer customers a broad portfolio of both clear and opaque products that share the benefits offered by Tritan. These blends also are easy to process and provide good melt flow, and because Tritan performs similarly to polycarbonate during processing, minimal retooling is needed.

Eastman Tritan™ copolyester has launched in the reusable sports water bottle, infant care, small appliance, signs, medical and housewares markets. Tritan offers a new level of design flexibility, toughness, and heat and chemical resistance, and is manufactured without bisphenol-A (BPA).
