Eastman Provides Customers With Innovative, Sustainable Materials

Kingsport, Tenn. — July 29, 2009 — Eastman Chemical Company announced that two product applications made with Eastman™ copolyesters picked up three awards at the 2009 International Plastics Design Competition held June 24 during NPE2009 in Chicago. The awards, sponsored by the Alliance of Plastics Processors, allowed designers and manufacturers of components and finished products to display their most innovative achievements before tens of thousands of plastics professionals. Among the awards, the KOR ONE Hydration Vessel was recognized with the Sustainable Consumer Product Award and the iSecure Syringe from Hospira, Inc., received both the 11th annual International Designers Society of America/Plastics News Award and Medical Commercial Product Award.

The KOR ONE Hydration Vessel is a refillable water bottle designed to inspire consumers to reduce plastic bottle waste going into landfills and embrace the idea of reuse. Made with Eastman Tritan™ copolyester, the KOR ONE offers consumers a tough, long-lasting product manufactured without bisphenol-A (BPA). The bottle’s design offers an intuitive, one-handed operation. With just the press of a thumb, the latch releases, freeing the lid to hinge back and stay put to give unobstructed access to the mouthpiece.
“By working with KOR Water and design firms like RKS, we are able to provide the resources and tools to utilize versatile plastic materials that allow differentiated design and unique products,” said Gaylon White, manager, Design Industry Programs, Eastman Chemical Company. “We continually reach out to the industrial design community to offer strategic and innovative material options that fit their design needs.”

Hospira’s iSecure Syringe is an innovative, tamper-evident, single-dose, ready-to-use, disposable syringe. The iSecure Syringe represents a breakthrough for Hospira, by using multishot molding and in-mold assembly to create a final part with four different pieces and three materials, including Eastman Eastar™ copolyester. The iSecure Syringe’s simple preparation process requires no ancillary supplies, streamlining workflow and lowering injection costs compared with traditional vial administration. The syringe is designed to be compact and self-contained for easy storage and administration.

The pre-filled and ready-to-use platform helps reduce the potential risk of drug contamination along with standardized dosing, ensuring accuracy of drug delivery. The pre-filled iSecure Syringe reduces the environmental footprint by eliminating traditional packaging, which reduces hospital waste. Unlike other pre-filled syringes that utilize external packaging to aid in tamper evidence, Hospira’s iSecure Syringe integrates tamper evidence in the primary cap label, in the tamper band and in the protection of the drug cartridge prior to activation.

“We are pleased that both of these product applications have been recognized for their commitment to innovation and sustainability,” White said. “These awards are evidence of the importance of choosing innovative materials for product design, and Eastman strives to be a strategic materials supplier that works with customers to help them achieve these results.”
