Kingsport, Tenn. — May 2, 2012 — Rubbermaid Commercial Products (RCP), the leader in solution-based commercial products, has developed first-of-its-kind, bisphenol A (BPA)-free sustainable foodservice products that will live up to the demands of any busy commercial or institutional kitchen. RCP created these products with Eastman Chemical Company using its Tritan™ copolyester, a BPA-free material that offers the advantages of durability and clarity.
“As individual states have begun to regulate use of BPA in food contact materials, Rubbermaid Commercial Products has made the significant step in becoming the first company to offer a full line of foodservice industry products made of a durable, BPA-free plastic material that also benefit sustainability initiatives,” said Mark Jackmore, vice president of marketing, Rubbermaid Commercial Products. “Now, our award-winning plastic products are BPA-free to meet industry standards and commercial kitchens’ needs for preparing, serving, storing and transporting food safely.”
Operators, chefs and national account purchasing directors can look for products made with Eastman Tritan™ copolyester in four RCP foodservice categories:
- Ingredient management
- Food pans, boxes and square containers
- PROSERVE™ line of products
- ProSave® line of products
RCP is committed to the success of its foodservice partners and customers, as the first and only brand to bring 100 percent BPA-free plastic foodservice contact products to the commercial market. RCP continues to demonstrate that it is not only focused on being a partner for the smartest solutions but also on ensuring its customers and end-users can switch to the new, BPA-free foodservice products easily.
Recognizing the durability and sustainability attributes of Eastman Tritan™ copolyester,
RCP chose Eastman to produce its four product lines previously made from polycarbonate (PC). Tritan has an inherent toughness that can help increase product life as well as reduce waste, allowing food service industry professionals to work more easily toward sustainability goals and initiatives. Tritan is GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified®.
Additionally, Eastman Tritan™ copolyester retains crystal-clear clarity, even after repeated commercial dishwashing, so it won’t craze or discolor over time. Approximately 95 percent of the RCP foodservice items made with Tritan are clear, allowing users to readily see inside containers.
Eastman helped RCP mold Tritan™ copolyester to meet quality standards for the end products. The products then underwent performance testing, centering on real-world application scenarios, such as drop testing and repeated dishwashing. After field testing with select large chain accounts, RCP received positive feedback about the switch to Tritan, making it feel confident in a successful product launch.
“We have talked to national accounts that are pleased RCP has taken this stance and is providing an alternative to PC,” said Jackmore. RCP’s new BPA-free products are available through foodservice and broadline distributors.
