Eastman Innovation Lab Web Site Captures Industrial Design Award   RSS

KINGSPORT, Tenn. June 27, 2005 - Eastman Chemical Company (NYSE:EMN) announced today that its Eastman Innovation Lab Web site, www.EastmanInnovationLab.com, captured the gold award for its creator, The Brewery, in the 2005 Industrial Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) competition in the Digital Media and Interfaces category.

The IDEA competition, sponsored by BusinessWeek magazine and the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), is one of the world's most prestigious design competitions. It promotes business and public understanding of the importance of industrial design excellence to the economy and the quality of life. Awards will be presented Aug. 27 at the IDSA 2005 Conference in Washington, D.C.

The Eastman Innovation Lab Web site is a unique resource for designers and brand owners. The site promotes awareness of materials manufactured by Eastman and encourages the design of new products using its materials. In addition, the site provides ideas for improving existing products and for developing new market categories. Designers and design engineers from some of the world's leading companies make up some 60 percent of the site's users.

“The Eastman Innovation Lab brings the visitor into a world that clearly conveys credibility and expertise,” says Peter Arnell, IDSA, founder and chief creative officer, Arnell Group, and a judge in the IDEA competition. “Eastman's products speak for themselves while providing constant demonstration. The Web site provides confidence and demonstrates innovation within their category.”

According to IDSA, industrial designers determine the form, use features and interaction qualities of manufactured products, packaging and digital media systems. By studying people at work, at home and in motion, they match the design form with the optimum material to create products for home and workplace environments that fit how people live and work. IDSA recognized the Eastman Innovation Lab Web site as being unique among raw materials suppliers in presenting materials from the perspective of a designer; describing material attributes in simple, non-technical language; and showcasing relevant applications. Network links provide additional information, and high-quality visuals stimulate new ideas.

The Eastman Innovation Lab Web site accumulated nearly 124,000 unique hits by the end of its first year in March 2005, and the user base is expected to grow by at least 30 percent.
