New antioxidant for biodiesel fuels increases shelf life, enhances product protection.
San Antonio, Texas (Feb. 5, 2007) – Eastman Chemical Company announces BioExtend 30, a comprehensive antioxidant additive for biodiesel that extends shelf life and enhances product protection by inhibiting biodiesel's tendency to react with oxygen. Making its debut at the National Biodiesel Conference and Expo in San Antonio, Texas, BioExtend 30 provides superior oxidative stability allowing for superior results at low concentrations. What's more, biodiesel producers can be confident they are using a product that is registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
“BioExtend 30 will help biodiesel producers meet increasing consumer demand for environmentally compliant products without sacrificing the superior performance associated with traditional petroleum-based fuels,” says Bill Sade, Eastman’s business development manager for the company's performance chemicals and intermediates business organization.
BioExtend 30 has been tested in a variety of biodiesel fuels made from raw materials such as soybean, rapeseed, palm, cottonseed and sunflowers, all yielding excellent oxidative stability results. More unstable than petroleum-based fuels, biodiesel reacts more rapidly with oxygen, which can lead to product degradation and to polymer formation that clogs fuel filters, creating damaging engine deposits and residues.
BioExtend 30 is engineered to be used in much smaller quantities as compared to other commercially available products. The new Eastman offering is a complete antioxidant system – a combination of actives, a chelating agent and a solvent system – that is unique to the market.
“Eastman’s antioxidant expertise is extensive. We have been able to leverage our long history of supplying innovative antioxidants across an extensive range of markets -- from cosmetics and personal care to food, oils and fats,” says Sade.
