Eastman continues to partner with the East Texas Bee Keepers Association (ETBA) to provide honey bee demonstration hives at various locations to promote a better understanding of the important ecological role of the honey bee. Demonstration hives have been placed at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches; Discovery Science Place in Tyler; Texas Parks and Wildlife Nature Center in Tyler; Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens; East Texas Arboretum in Athens; Mineola Nature Preserve on the Sabine River; Texas Agricultural Education and Heritage Center in Seguin; and Eastman’s own Nature and Wildlife Habitat Center.
The honeybee, known to scientists as Apis mellifera, is a social insect that lives in colonies. Up to 50,000 individuals can live together in a hive. The colony is made up of a queen, male drones, and numerous female workers. Natural cavities provide shelter for bees in the wild. Honeycombs, composed of many 6-sided wax cells, contain the honey sought by animals and people alike!
