Nesting Box Program
Eastman maintains a bird nesting box program at
its site near Longview, Texas for native, cavity-nesting species. There are
approximately 12 Eastern Bluebird boxes, 8 Wood Duck boxes, 10 Tree Swallow,
and 2 Purple Martin boxes on site. The boxes provide nesting places that
these cavity-nesting species would not otherwise have on plant grounds. Each
spring and summer, our native birds use these nesting boxes
Bradley Holman, as part of his Boy Scout Eagle Project, coordinated the
installation of these boxes. Coot Rash, an Eastman retiree, constructed the
boxes. Guy Luneau, a current Eastman employee, oversees the maintenance of
these boxes to assure they provide the correct habitat for our feathered
friends.
In the case of Bluebirds and Tree Swallows, the parents produce two and
sometimes three sets of young over the course of the breeding season. Each
bluebird and swallow clutch produces from three to six young, and fledging
success is high from the Eastman boxes. Approximately 100-150 new Eastern
Bluebirds, 50-100 new Wood Ducks, 50-100 new Tree Swallows, and 50-100 new
Purple Martins enter the world through the Eastman Nesting Box Program.
