Junior Girl Scouts, Brownies earn community service patches planting wildflower seeds

Four Junior Girl Scout/Brownie troops in Longview have earned community service hours in March of 1998 by helping to plant wildflower seeds to beautify an area near South Longview.
The Girl Scouts and Brownies ranged from second grade to eighth grade. Planting the wildflower seeds enabled them to earn the Girl Scout Community Service patch. The activity also applied toward earning the Girl Scout Out-of-Doors Dabbler patch, which involves tackling six of 10 types of outdoor activities.
"We very much appreciate these young ladies spending part of their Saturday to help make this area more beautiful," said Mike Childress, manager of Communications & Public Affairs at Eastman. "In
time, these seeds will provide a beautiful legacy for us - and our children - to enjoy."
Eastman employees, retirees, family members and others in the community signed up to help with the wildflower seed planting.
Other partners in the project included Made-Rite's Jack Mann Sr. and Becky Murray, who provided cold drinks, and John Glimpse of Blue Bell Ice Cream, who provided ice cream treats for the volunteers. Longview Grounds Maintenance also assisted in the preparation for the project.
