| If paint is applied at temperatures below painting conditions on the can or label, can problems be expected? |
| |
| Potential problems include cracking, poor color development, poor weatherability and less gloss. The MFFT (minimum film forming temperature) is a function of the type and amount of coalescing agent present. Texanol ester alcohol is one of the best coalescing agents available and has a freezing point of -50ºC(-58ºF). The paint manufacturers usually specify a minimum application temperature of 50ºF(10º C). These guideline are best followed even if some paint manufacturers provide some margin for slightly colder temperatures. Additional coalescing agent can be added to provide good performance at lower temperatures. However, the amount of coalescing aid used today is held close to the minimum needed in order to hold down VOC content.
