Why can't any solvent work as a coalescing agent?

Not all water insoluble materials, such as hydrocarbon solvents, are effective coalescing aids. These materials are not compatible with some latex emulsions. An efficient coalescing aid will be water insoluble to minimize coalescing aid loss during water evaporation and water migration into a porous substrate. It will also have good plasticizing efficiency for all types of latex emulsions. Texanol ester alcohol has both features that help make it the coalescing aid of choice for a majority of the latex architectural paint sold worldwide. Texanol ester alcohol has an ideal evaporation rate for all flats and most semi-gloss paints.
