Part Design: Cantilever Snap-Fit

Critical Constraints

  • Snap length and deflection are the two most critical factors
    in snap-fit design.
  • Latch deflection must return to the zero position after engagement to prevent stress relaxation (creep).

Notes:

The Cantilever Snap-Fit Design Analysis Wizard is available in the Technical Solutions section of www.eastman.com. It calculates the theoretical strain that occurs when a snap-fit latch is deflected. The maximum strain occurs on the outer layer of the thickness, usually at the base of the latch. Strains can also be calculated for a latch, which varies linearly in both thickness and width from the base of the tip to the latch.
