Field Failure Analysis: Suspect Areas

Description

Plastic failures will occur in one of these suspect areas. Remember these suspect areas while looking over the fracture evidence (branching, river markings, etc.), to pinpoint the initial fracture site.

Remember that plastic failures will be tensile failures. The outer fibers of the molded part will separate during tensile stress and provide tiny cracks that will initiate a fracture.

It is typically essential to recreate the part(s) movement at impact. This will enable you to visualize the probable area of tension. Then you can look for a suspect area in the vicinity of the tensile stress.
