Alata refers to the corky wings on the twigs. Winged elm is a favorite shade and ornamental tree. It is easily transplanted. It sprouts readily from seed; it grows relatively rapid, and it is relatively free of disease and insects. The wood makes excellent tool handles and agricultural implements.
