| Greenbrier (Smilax spp.)... | ||
|
If you have ever been snagged by this vine you can appreciate its various common names. The thorns are like the claws of cats. The succulent growing tips of the vines, as they emerge in the spring, furnish a delightful nibble for deer. The blue-black berries are not toxic. However, they are not considered edible. The berries are like rubber, hence the name "stretchberry" and they produce beautiful dyes for wool. Quick ID: With one exception, greenbriars are woody vines with spines scattered on the stem. Vine climbs with the help of tendrils. Leaves entire, lobed, or spiny. |
