Actions and advocacy

We’re focused on doing our part to build "A Better Circle." That means doing more than ever to mitigate climate change for a better planet. It means delivering sustainable solutions for the global plastic waste crisis through innovation and collaboration. And Eastman’s efforts to curb plastic waste starts with molecular recycling.

Our experts are pioneering the shift to circular materials — right now. We’re revolutionizing our materials to give them an infinite life and richer purpose through two molecular recycling technologies: carbon renewal and polyester renewal. This takes passionate problem-solving, world-class technologies and a willingness to advocate for smart legislation.

The time to act — and advocate — is now. Our goal is to transform tomorrow by revolutionizing the materials that shape it today.

Eastman is active with a number of organizations with shared visions and goals.

The Recycling Partnership is a mission-driven NGO committed to building a circular economy by building a better recycling system. They envision a future where the burden of waste has been transformed into a beneficial resource. They partner with companies to:

  1. Achieve packaging circularity.
  2. Increase access to recycled materials.
  3. Meet sustainability commitments.

Eastman is a member of the PET Recycling Coalition, an initiative to create scalable solutions to packaging and system changes. The focus of the group is to drive improvements that transform the recycling landscape for PET plastic (plastic RIC 1).

The U.S. Plastics Pact is a solutions-driven consortium founded by The Recycling Partnership and the World Wildlife Fund as part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s global Plastics Pact network. The U.S. Plastics Pact connects diverse public and private stakeholders across the plastics value chain to rethink the way we design, use and reuse plastics to create a path forward and realize a circular economy for plastic in the United States. Members are striving to reach four ambitious goals by 2025:

  1. Define and eliminate all problematic or unnecessary packaging.
  2. Make all plastic packaging 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable.
  3. Effectively recycle or compost 50% of plastic packaging.
  4. Average 30% recycled or responsibly sourced biobased content.

At the heart of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation New Plastics Economy Global Commitment is a vision of a circular economy for plastic in which it never becomes waste. Signatories commit to three actions to realize this vision:

  1. Eliminate all problematic and unnecessary plastic items.
  2. Innovate to ensure that the plastics we do need are reusable, recyclable or compostable.
  3. Circulate all used plastic items to keep them in the economy and out of the environment.
