Eastman Solus for protective and marine coatings

Railcars, industrial equipment and marine vessels endure some of the harshest conditions imaginable. The coatings on these items must be tough too. Eastman Solus performance additives are durable enough to protect heavy-use equipment and adaptable enough to enable applicator success.

Industrial-strength protection

The general industrial market includes a variety of applications, technologies and end uses that must withstand harsh environments. The fitness-for-use requirements for general industrial coatings include the need for higher durability and chemical resistance, improved adhesion and better appearance while meeting regulatory requirements.

Solus enhances coatings for structural aluminum and foil, stainless steel, chromium, brass, silver and tin where users need surface protection and luster maintenance. Systems based on Solus can be formulated into clear or pigmented coatings with good adhesion to metallic surfaces. They are resistant to salt, fog, oxygen and other tarnishing elements.

Solus boosts looks without sacrificing performance

Solus can provide excellent surface hardness, good film strength and these additional benefits:

Appearance

  • Improves the appearance of pearlescent and metallic coatings
  • Provides a high-gloss surface
  • Controls defects
  • Resists yellowing

Durability

  • Provides exterior UV weatherability and durability
  • Improves handleability, scratch resistance, early water resistance and blocking
  • Protects metal surfaces, maintaining metallic luster in challenging environments
  • Resists grease, moisture, heat and oils

Formulation flexibility

  • Works as an additive, modifier or co-resin
  • Can be cross-linked, particularly with isocyanates and amino resins (especially with higher-hydroxyl grades of Solus)
  • Solubility of high-hydroxyl propionate grades in alcohol-water mixtures
  • Impacts pigment wetting and dispersion characteristics
  • Provides good adhesion
  • Enables reduced solvent use

Processing improvements

  • Reduces drying time due to high Tg and fast solvent release
  • Provides excellent hardness development and reduces blocking
  • Nonflammable
  • Improves safety compared to nitrocellulose
  • Enhances rheology benefits that enable sprayability
