Tritan beverageware prototype field-tested in Chicago restaurant

Kingsport, Tenn. — March 15, 2010 — Eastman Chemical Company announced today that U.S. Acrylic, a supplier of housewares and giftware products, has introduced Clarus™, one of the largest collections of beverageware made exclusively with Eastman Tritan™ copolyester. The collection also includes serving accessories. Tritan balances the properties of clarity, toughness, and heat and chemical resistance, and is manufactured without bisphenol-A (BPA).

“We recognized the importance of a BPA-free material for production of the Clarus collection, but as we considered polycarbonate (PC) alternatives, we quickly realized the other advantages of Eastman Tritan™ copolyester,” said Jerry Lee, CEO of U.S. Acrylic. “With Tritan, we were able to create new-generation drinkware that provided a highly durable, clear and safe product for consumers.”

U.S. Acrylic also chose Eastman Tritan™ copolyester for the production of the Clarus line of tumblers, stemware, pitchers, mugs and serving accessories because it is extremely dishwasher-durable, heat- and chemical-resistant, and made in the United States.

After selecting Eastman Tritan™ copolyester, U.S. Acrylic simultaneously began field-testing prototyped tumblers made with Tritan in one of Chicago’s busiest restaurants, Bob Chinn’s Crab House. After six months of testing and an estimated 500 cycles in a commercial dishwasher, the tumblers made with Tritan maintained their toughness and visual appeal better than those made with styrene acrylonitrile (SAN).

The initial results of our field test are extremely encouraging and provide verification and support of our decision to use Eastman Tritan™ copolyester for the Clarus line,” Lee said. “Eastman has helped us achieve a quality product that wouldn’t have been possible without its technical support and high level of service.”
