Challenges for polyolefin packaging
Nitrocellulose (NC)-based inks create significant recycling challenges, especially when used on polyolefin laminated substrates. During recycling, the NC-based inks cause thermal instability that leads to discoloration and degrades the quality of the recycled material. As a result, recovering and reusing material becomes difficult, making the recycling process more complicated.
Recognizing these challenges and inefficiencies, the German Central Office for Packaging Recycling, Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister, introduced a new minimum standard to assess packaging recyclability. This regulation, passed in June 2023, classifies packaging containing NC-based inks on polyolefin laminated structures as nonrecyclable. The regulation not only limits recycling options but also places greater financial responsibility on brands through extended producer responsibility (EPR) legislation and requires businesses to cover the costs associated with packaging waste management. This has created an urgent need for NC alternatives in packaging inks — solutions with higher thermal stability to preserve the quality of the recycled materials.
A high-performing alternative
Eastman Solus™ performance additives offer a powerful and sustainable solution for ink formulations. For NC-free inks, Solus™ delivers outstanding performance without the drawbacks of nitrocellulose. It offers key safety and performance benefits, including nonflammability and the absence of nitrosamine formation. Engineered to meet stringent high-speed printing demands, especially on packaging films, Solus-based inks offer fast drying times, excellent adhesion, and vibrant, consistent color — even in challenging production conditions.
Solus™ additives for inks are free from harmful chemicals and can enhance the recyclability of polyolefin substrates while also being compatible with a wide range of other materials. Our additives enable manufacturers to improve recyclability without compromising quality or performance.
