Energy management

We are mindful that our manufacturing processes require large amounts of energy, which is why we are committed to implementing innovative solutions to maximize efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Energy efficiency is a critical component of our strategy to achieve aggressive GHG reduction goals. Our commitment pays off through financial savings for our business and reduction of our environmental footprint. Reducing our energy use and emissions is an ongoing effort with clear, measurable targets.

As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Better Plants Challenge Partner, Eastman’s worldwide energy management team worked with the DOE and the Oak Ridge and Lawrence Berkeley National Labs to develop an aspirational goal of 20% improvement in energy intensity. We chose a baseline year of 2008– the year Eastman became an ENERGY STAR® Partner. Through 2021, we have reduced energy intensity by 12.3%.

Our energy efficiency program continues to be recognized. Multiple Eastman projects are highlighted on the DOE Better Plants website. In 2022, for the 29th consecutive year, Eastman received energy efficiency awards from the American Chemistry Council, which chose five projects for distinction in reducing energy consumption and GHG emissions. Two projects received exceptional merit, and one was selected by DOE for a Better Project Award.

Eastman continues to implement innovative approaches to natural resource management, signified by the restructuring of Eastman’s energy management program in 2016 to become the global natural resource management program. The program scope now focuses not only on energy efficiency improvements, but also increased emphasis on water conservation and reuse in recognition of the link between water use and energy.

The company’s process, design and engineering teams are working to increase Eastman’s energy efficiency and reduce its GHG emissions by incorporating energy efficiency and process transformation projects, employing renewable energy options, and exploring and evaluating breakthrough energy technologies. An energy workstream that is part of the company’s operations transformation program provides additional rigor with increased engagement by Eastman senior management.
