Fluid administration

Every component in a medical device impacts its reliability and safety. Fluid administration requires high-quality materials that can withstand various fluids and aggressive disinfectants. Eastman medical polymers provide the necessary durability and reliability, helping minimize malfunction risk and enhancing overall treatment effectiveness.

Fluid administration

To enhance patient safety and boost healthcare professionals' confidence, healthcare providers and medical device manufacturers face increasing pressure to prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and medical device tubing misconnections. Eastman can help with its high-performing polymers that deliver:

  • Chemical resistance to withstand aggressive medical disinfectants, powerful oncology drugs and drug carrier solvents
  • Toughness to withstand the stress of assembly and connection
  • Rigidity to comply with changing small-bore connector standards (ISO 80369)
  • Sustainability to help meet environmentally preferable purchasing (EPP) guidelines

Better chemical resistance

Eastman Tritan™ copolyester is an innovative polymer that offers a reliable blend of chemical resistance and impact strength. It provides toughness that’s comparable to polycarbonate (PC) but is more compatible than PC with medical disinfectants that can cause cracking, haziness and failure in IV components, including:

  • Virex® TB
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Formaldehydes
  • Peracetic acids

Meet small-bore connector standards

To prevent tubing misconnections or failures, new ISO 80369 standards call for connectors to be rigid enough to avoid force-fitting tubes with devices intended for other medical applications. Tritan copolyester meets these rigidity standards and also offers:

  • Excellent solvent bonding to tubing
  • Superior chemical resistance, toughness and clarity
  • Color and functional stability after sterilization with e-beam or gamma irradiation
  • No bisphenol A (BPA) content

Innovation and sustainability

Eastman Tritan copolyester helps you innovate while advancing sustainability goals. Its features include:

  • Inherent toughness that reduces waste
  • Reduced breakage during shipping and handling
  • Components that require less packaging
  • Compliance with hospital EPP guidelines
  • No BPA content
  • Absence of halogens (chlorine, bromine, etc.)
  • Exemption from ortho-phthalate plasticizers (DEHP)

Clarity that lasts

Tritan copolyester is an innovative polymer that offers durable clarity in demanding healthcare environments. Tritan offers a balance of chemical resistance and impact strength and is BPA-free, offering significant advantages over other engineering thermoplastics. Tritan enhances reliability and safety that inspires clinician confidence in applications like:

Surgical devices

  • Oxygenators
  • Bubble traps
  • Hematological reservoirs
  • Housing for hematological filters
  • Housing for cardioplegia filters
  • Connectors and stopcocks

Blood management devices

  • Centrifuge bowls
  • Blood separation cassettes
  • Blood microfilters

Renal dialysis devices

  • Hemodialysis systems and accessories
  • Peritoneal dialysis systems and accessories
  • Filters
  • Dialyzers
  • Connectors

A resilient and strong polymer

Medical device manufacturers face pressure to provide innovative products that can withstand sterilization, medical disinfectants, powerful new drugs and carriers, and other chemicals. Tritan does it all, as it:

  • Maintains transparency after sterilization, including gamma, e-beam and ethylene oxide (EtO) methods
  • Preserves aesthetic and functional integrity post-sterilization and after exposure to blood, lipids and disinfectants with superior chemical resistance
  • Enhances flexibility for bonding PVC or polyurethane tubes with connectors thanks to its compatibility with solvents and adhesives
  • Is free from BPA, halogens and ortho-phthalates
  • Reduces fibrinogen adsorption compared to other polymers

Clear processing advantages

Consistent, high-quality Tritan copolyester can eliminate the secondary annealing step required to reduce stress cracking issues in some devices made with polycarbonate.

This can reduce processing bottlenecks, improve yield and reduce overall system costs. By choosing Tritan, you get:

  • Good resin flow and easy release
  • Reduced black specks and flow marks
  • Greater flexibility for solvent bonding and other secondary operations
  • Excellent impact strength — especially valuable for devices with multiple ports
