Responding to regulatory and customer demands, Eastman is developing polyester BPA-NI resin technology that delivers improved resistance to food sterilization and offers long-term shelf stability while balancing the flexibility and toughness to withstand aggressive canning processes. Our team explores several fundamental techniques to demonstrate improved resistance to corrosion and chemical attack while balancing flexibility and adhesion through innovative resin and formulation design. You’ll learn how electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cathodic disbonding, coupled with fitness-for-use testing, were used to understand barrier properties of BPA-NI solutions in formulated coatings. These studies and techniques help build solid structure-property relationships, enabling better resin design for food contact metal packaging coatings. The presentation will address how BPA non-intent (BPA-NI) technology can replace BPA-based coatings while meeting or exceeding rigorous performance requirements.

About the presenter
Beniah earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Northwestern University. After postdoctoral work at The University of Texas at Austin, he joined Eastman as a coatings applications scientist in 2017. In his role, he addresses fundamental challenges facing the coatings market through new product development, interpretation of the structure-property relationship of Eastman products, and method development for product characterization. He draws on insights from coatings formulators, OEMs, and brand owners around the world.
