Eastman Solus for artificial turf infill

Artificial turf enables football matches to be played in all conditions. But the materials used to make the turf could lead to environmental impact after the match ends.

A new performance additive from Eastman can make a material difference for the environment.

Beneath the yarn fibers in a turf system is performance infill. This material helps keep the fibers upright. It also aids shock absorption and ball roll.

Performance infill is commonly made with polymeric-based material. It leaves behind potentially harmful chemicals such as microplastics that can get carried off the pitch and into the ground and water supply. This prompted the European Commission to propose a ban on polymeric infill.

Eastman has a safer replacement ready with Solus performance additives. Solus can be used in a coating which is then used as performance infill. This creates a biodegradable performance infill made with renewable feedstock that is free of harmful chemicals. Solus™ helps create a turf that requires less upkeep than those using other organic infills and meets FIFA player safety and performance requirements.

The result is turf that reduces maintenance cost and environmental impact. That’s solid ground for anyone who makes or uses turf.

Powering next-generation artificial turf systems

With Solus, our mission is:

  • To make performance infills in artificial turf systems with similar performance to incumbent infills that are more sustainable and cost effective
  • To enable safe turf systems that meet environmental regulations
  • To make the jobs of turf designers and maintenance workers easier
  • To create safer, more comfortable playing conditions for athletes

A sustainable performance infill coating solution

Solus for artificial turf infill series works as a sand coating additive to create a sustainable performance infill that’s free from materials of concern. It can enhance a company’s sustainability journey at the start and end of product life. Solus allows customers to meet pending environmental regulations on polymeric turf infills before they take effect.

Efficient performance

Incorporating Solus can reduce maintenance costs without sacrificing performance. Coated sand is a heavier infill than rubber. That weight helps decrease infill migration, reducing the need for infill top-ups.

Performance infills using Solus also meet FIFA player safety and performance requirements.
