How does the toughness of Spectar sheet stand up to mechanical fastening?

Because of its outstanding toughness, Eastman Spectar™ copolyester adapts to mechanical fastening more readily than many other materials and can be fastened with nails, screws, rivets, and anchors. Spectar’s high impact resistance reduces the potential for cracking or breakage during fabrication, shipping, and ongoing consumer behavior use or abuse. Spectar’s durability can also extend the life span of retail fixtures and displays, decreasing replacement needs and saving money.

Mechanical fastening is useful when assembling or installing large or heavy parts, or when a suitable solvent or adhesive system is not available. It is one of the many highly effective techniques to bond materials, such as plastic, wood, or metal, when creating point-of-purchase displays and in-store fixtures. It is accomplished by predrilling holes in the pieces to be connected and securing them together using a mechanical fastener, such as a screw, rivet, or bolt.

Tips for mechanical fastening for Eastman Spectar™ copolyester

  • Use screws designed specifically for plastics.
  • For best results, drill a pilot hole to prevent bulging near fasteners.
  • If bolting parts together, allow for thermal expansion and contraction by drilling oversized holes.
  • Use sharp tools to avoid chips and notches and to ensure holes have smooth edges.
  • Use of washers is suggested when bolting for better load distribution.
  • Use metal inserts if frequent assembly/reassembly is involved.
  • Inserts are not recommended where thermal expansion and contraction may occur.
  • Do not overly tighten or use self-tapping screws.
