When authorized as a hygiene condition enhancer in the EU, the feed additive gives
the animal nutrition industry more flexibility to reduce contaminations
KINGSPORT, Tenn., May 7, 2019 – On March 15, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published its opinion on the effectiveness of sodium formate liquid, concluding that it has potential as a hygiene-condition enhancer. This positive conclusion allows for the next step: the European Union (EU) authorization of sodium formate for this use.
If authorized, sodium formate will be the second EU-authorized additive considered a hygiene condition enhancer; formic acid has been authorized for this use since June 2017. Both feed additives have been shown to be effective against specific microbial contamination, such as Salmonella, in feed and feed materials.
Eastman animal nutrition experts believe the authorization of sodium formate liquid will give the EU feed industry more flexibility to offer effective solutions that reduce specific contaminations.
“Within Eastman, we look forward to this additional authorization,” said Irene Quintana, marketing director, animal nutrition, Eastman. “It will enable us to further customize our applications and create solutions that effectively address the challenges of specific microbial contaminations in feeds and feed materials and thus contribute to a safe feed for animals.”
